This is a boost circuit to get 5V 2A output from a single Lithium Ion cell ( 3.7V/4.2V). It also has a harge and discharge protection function, so it will prevent the cell from being over charged or over discharged.

The module comes with a lithium battery protection function (the lithium battery does not need to have a protection board, it does not matter if it has a protection board)
